Virgilio’s monument, work of Floriano Bodini (1933-2005), was placed in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in 1988. It was wanted in 1981, on the occasion of the two thousandth anniversary of the death of the author of the Aeneid, which took place in Brindisi in 19 B.C In Carrara marble, the composition has its fulcrum in the winged Victory, devoid of arms, placed on the top of a column along which slips a shroud. At the base are a helmet, a horse, sheep, an olive branch, with reference to central themes in Virgilian poetry. Floriano Bodini studied in Milan at the Brera Academy. From 1987 until 1998 he held the chair of sculpture at the Technical University of Architecture in Darmstadt in Germany and author of numerous monumental works such as the Holy Door for the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome.
