Via Casimiro archaeological area

A large fluted spur, part of a stone column, indicates the presence, on via Casmiro, of an important archaeological area with remains of a public building dating back to the imperial era (first half of the II century AD), floors of residential units from the Republican period (1st-2nd century BC), fragments relating to the Basilica of San Pelino.

To this are referred to the “vetero-Christian” sarcophagus in local stone of the Palestinian type, with crosses in relief with equal arms and the votive plate with representation of the bird that pecks the branch of a vegetable, referable to the late 7th century and preserved in the museum Provincial “Ribezzo”. On the site are marble remains attributed to a portico belonging to a monumental building for whose construction, in the Trajan age, when to give rise to a ‘large urban redefinition of the city in the monumental sense, it was necessary to demolish civilian buildings of the Republican age of which the remarkable mosaic floors remain.
