An itinerary for those who have little time but do not want to miss the best of the beauties in the historic center
From Piazza Vittoria, leaving behind the seventeenth-century Fontana De Torres, move towards the imposing white mass of the municipal theater. Built in the Sixties and named after G. Verdi, the theater remains “suspended” on the archaeological area of S. Pietro degli Schiavoni where you can admire the remains of the ancient Brundisium. A few meters away the Granafei Nervegna palace preserves the original elements of the surviving Roman column, the floors of a rich domus as well as hosting important temporary exhibitions. Once out of the Palace turn right into Via Duomo and immediately left into Via Balzo, crossing Largo de Calò and the narrow Deico Pass you will be at the Temple of S. Giovanni al Sepolcro, unmissable pearl among the medieval monuments of the city. From here take Via S. Giovanni and turn right into Via Tarantini at the end of which you will find yourself on Piazza Duomo. On the square there is the cathedral dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the seminary palace and the archiepiscopal palace that houses the public library “A. De Leo “, the Regional Archaeological Museum” F. Ribezzo “adjacent to the portico of the Templars. Walking along Via Colonne in front of your eyes will open the evocative panorama of the inner harbor. From the little square on which the Roman columns rise, symbol of the city, you can see, on the opposite quay, the Monument to the Sailor of Italy and in the distance the Castello alfonsino.
TOUR OF THE INTERNAL PORT
Itinerary for those who want to combine more experiences in a single visit: from the ride on motorboat, to the visit to the museum, to the panoramic walk
Start from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II with the monument to Virgil of 1985 and head towards the panoramic Lungomare Regina Margherita. Keeping the sea on the right you will meet the Roman columns, the Virgilio stairway and next to the Palazzina del Belvedere with the Faldetta archaeological collection and shortly after the Tourist House. Continue straight until you reach Piazzale Lenio Flacco from where you can see the fountain of the empire.
From the Montenegro dock take the stp motorboat that will take you to the fishing village, on the opposite bank and reach on foot the Monument to the sailor of Italy wanted by Mussolini to remember the sailors who fell during the First World War. Return to the center by taking the boat back from the fishing village
PONENTE AND LEVANTE
From Piazza Vittoria take Via C. Battisti, cross Piazza Mercato with its characteristic Art Nouveau style roof and exit in Via F. Fornari. Turning left, after a few meters, you will find the church of S. Maria degli Angeli built by the will of S. Lorenzo da Brindisi. Continue straight on along Via Carmine, follow it all the way up to Porta Mesagne, a Renaissance fortification flanked by the Roman limestone tanks. Turning on the left in via Cristoforo Colombo you reach the tower of Inferno and the Castello Svevo, today the headquarters of the Navy. Of the Castle it is possible to admire the walkway of the curtains and the entrance, being forbidden to visit the military area. Following Via dei Mille you will meet the Church of San Paolo restored in 2018, immediately after the panoramic Piazza Santa Teresa with the War Memorial of the First World War, by the sculptor Edgardo Simone and the church of Santa Teresa flanked by the convent today State Archives. With your back to the square turn right, cross Piazza Dante to reach via Tarantini, turn left and reach the complex of Pie schools which you can cross the cloister. From via Balzo you will reach Largo Calò and the unmissable church of S. Giovanni al Sepolcro. Return to the “G. Verdi “fronted by the 16th century Palazzo Nervegna and from here go to the Duomo square where you can admire the Duomo, the Palazzo del Seminario, the Public Archbishop’s Library” A. De Leo “, the Archaeological Museum” F. Ribezzo “. From Piazza Duomo, passing under the arch of the bell tower you will arrive in Piazzetta columns to admire the Roman monument, symbol of the city.
At this point you can continue the visit to discover the monuments that overlook the inner harbor or continue on the hill of the east breast
LEVANTE
Start from Piazza Vittoria, leaving behind the seventeenth-century fountain De Torres and the municipal theater “G. Verdi “reach the medieval church of Santa Lucia with its splendid crypt. Narrow streets to reach the Church of Christ of the Dominicans and get off via Porta Lecce to admire the city gate with the coat of arms of Carlo V. Go back in the city center along the east breast, walking along Via Del Mare.
